The Advanced Placement (AP) program in the United States is a college-level course initiative approved by the College Board. It consists of subjects that students can choose to take and take exams for, including 22 disciplines such as physics, chemistry, literature, and history, with 34 specific subjects in total. Taking AP exams not only demonstrates a student’s interest in a subject but can also provide advantages in college admissions and allow for credit transfer or enrollment in advanced courses upon entering college.
Exam Format
Most AP exams consist of standardized tests that assess learning outcomes, with two main components:
Section 1: Multiple Choice - Computer-scored multiple-choice questions.
Section 2: Free Response - Hand-scored free response or essay questions.
Subjects Offered
The 34 subjects are categorized into six major areas:
English
World Languages & Cultures
History & Social Sciences
Math & Computer Sciences
Arts
Science
Course Features
The highest score for AP exams is 5, with the following typical scoring standards:
5: Extremely well qualified
4: Well qualified
3: Qualified
2: Not qualified
1: No score (did not take the exam)
Students typically choose AP courses in their 11th or 12th grade. Registration for exams usually occurs in the spring, with AP exams typically held in May. The format includes both multiple-choice and free response questions, varying by subject. Because the depth of AP courses is roughly equivalent to that of college freshman courses, completing AP subjects with college recognition can earn credit or allow students to take advanced courses directly. Many universities accept scores of 3 or higher for credit, though specific policies vary by institution. Top universities, such as Harvard, generally require scores of 4 or 5 for credit transfer. Additionally, the rigor of AP courses can further demonstrate a student’s capabilities and interest in subjects, potentially enhancing their chances of admission.
